The Story of This Rug
The Shah Abbas design originated in the large-palmette garden compositions of 17th-century Safavid royal workshops; large floral rosettes are linked by curling branches. Afghan artisans carry this heritage onto a faded gray field, adapting the classic composition for contemporary interiors. The wool is treated with plant-based mordants, dyed repeatedly with root dyes, and naturally washed to achieve its faded tone.
Why Choose a One-of-a-Kind Handwoven Afghan Rug
- Uniqueness: There is only one of this rug; its knotting rhythm and dye lot can never be replicated.
- Plant-dye durability: Unlike synthetic aniline dyes, root dyes do not fade; they only soften over time.
- Ghazni wool: Long-fiber wool with a high lanolin content, sourced from high-altitude sheep, provides natural stain resistance and a silky sheen.
- Asymmetrical Persian knot: Finer detail resolution and sharper motif edges than the Turkish (Gördes) knot.
- Investment value: Genuine Afghan rugs dyed with plant-based dyes gain value through generations of use.
Color and Design
Large Shah Abbas palmettes and star rosettes are arranged symmetrically on a gray field; small clusters of flowers and leaves in indigo blue, pomegranate green, orange, and ivory bring the field to life. The border frames the composition with a fine botanical pattern and a row of palmettes on a gray-purple ground.
Care Recommendations
- Vacuum at a low setting using a brushless vacuum attachment.
- Blot spills immediately with a white cotton cloth; do not rub.
- Rotate 180° every six months so sunlight and foot traffic are distributed evenly.
- Leave wet cleaning to a rug cleaner specializing in plant dyes.

Protect Its Elegance
To preserve the original splendor and silky texture of Carpetdocia’s handwoven creations made with natural fibers—which add value to your living space—for generations, a careful care routine is essential.
Immediate Action and Liquid Spills
When a liquid spills, timing is critical. Using a clean, slightly damp cloth, blot the liquid gently from the surface without rubbing. Always work in the direction of the rug’s pile (the natural direction in which the fibers lie). Rubbing can damage the shape of delicate fibers such as TENCEL™ and viscose. If in doubt, stop immediately.
Routine Care and Light Balance
For your weekly cleaning routine, always use a vacuum cleaner with low suction. High-powered upright vacuums and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance how natural yarns react to light and prevent uneven changes in color (fading), we recommend rotating your rug every 2 to 6 months.
Expert Care (Professional Cleaning)
Fine textures such as handwoven fibers, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. These products can irreversibly damage the rug’s silky sheen and structural integrity. For a thorough clean, seek help only from professional rug care centers specializing in natural fibers.
