The Story of This Rug
The central medallion and corner-piece tradition is one of the best-known composition schemes in Safavid Persian rug design; the medallion represents the “celestial dome,” while the corner pieces reflect it in four directions. In the 19th century, Ziegler & Co. adapted this scheme in Sultanabad with a soft, root-dyed interpretation. This rug carries on that tradition with a small central medallion and a rich network of palmettes.
Why Choose a One-of-a-Kind Handwoven Afghan Rug
- Authenticity: There is only one of this rug; its knotting rhythm and dye batch can never be replicated.
- Durable natural dyes: Unlike synthetic aniline dyes, root dyes do not fade; they only soften over time.
- Ghazni wool: Long-staple, lanolin-rich wool from high-altitude sheep offers natural stain resistance and a silky sheen.
- Asymmetrical Persian knot: Finer detail resolution and sharper motif edges than the Turkish (Gördes) knot.
- Investment value: Genuine plant-dyed Afghan rugs gain value with use across generations.
Color and Pattern
An elegant medallion accented with moss green and ivory sits at the center of the madder-red field, surrounded by a dense network of Shah Abbas palmettes and lotus rosettes. Mustard, navy, and walnut-shell tones fill the palmettes. The border features a chain of palmettes on a cream field, with a narrow leafy band on the inner guard.
Care Recommendations
- Vacuum on a low setting with a brushless vacuum head.
- Blot spills immediately with a white cotton cloth; do not rub.
- Rotate 180° every 6 months to distribute sunlight and foot traffic evenly.
- Leave wet cleaning to a rug specialist experienced with natural dyes.
A small medallion draws a rain of palmettes around it; this rug is precisely that kind of center of attraction.

Protect Its Elegance
To preserve the original splendor and silky texture of Carpetdocia’s handwoven creations made with natural fibers—which add value to your living space—for generations, a careful care routine is essential.
Immediate Action and Liquid Spills
When a liquid spills, timing is critical. Using a clean, slightly damp cloth, blot the liquid gently from the surface without rubbing. Always work in the direction of the rug’s pile (the natural direction in which the fibers lie). Rubbing can damage the shape of delicate fibers such as TENCEL™ and viscose. If in doubt, stop immediately.
Routine Care and Light Balance
For your weekly cleaning routine, always use a vacuum cleaner with low suction. High-powered upright vacuums and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance how natural yarns react to light and prevent uneven changes in color (fading), we recommend rotating your rug every 2 to 6 months.
Expert Care (Professional Cleaning)
Fine textures such as handwoven fibers, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. These products can irreversibly damage the rug’s silky sheen and structural integrity. For a thorough clean, seek help only from professional rug care centers specializing in natural fibers.
