The Story of This Rug
Shah Abbas motifs took shape in 17th-century Safavid court workshops, forming the foundation of a classic Persian garden aesthetic that links palmettes, rosettes, and scrolling vines. Rugs produced by the Ziegler company in Sultanabad in the late 19th century brought this heritage to the European market; today, Afghan weavers continue the same tradition in workshops in Mazar-i-Sharif. The light petrol blue ground complements modern interiors.
Why Choose a One-of-a-Kind Handwoven Afghan Rug
- Each rug is made by a single team of weavers; an exact replica cannot be produced.
- 100% Ghazni sheep’s wool resists stains thanks to its natural lanolin and develops a patina over the years.
- Unlike synthetic dyes, natural root and bark dyes gradually soften and mellow over time.
- The asymmetrical Persian knot creates a dense, durable weave.
- The natural washed finish gives the rug an antique texture and a soft feel.
Color and Pattern
Large palmettes sit at the center of the light petrol blue ground, surrounded by an all-over pattern of rosettes and scrolling vines. Madder red, golden yellow, and indigo bring the motifs to life, while ivory corner pieces frame the composition. A chain of palmettes and rosettes encircles the ground in the border.
Care Instructions
- Vacuum once a week on a low setting, without a brush attachment.
- Blot spills gently with a damp white cloth; do not rub.
- Have the rug inspected by a professional rug cleaner every 3-4 years.
- Keep out of direct sunlight and use a rug pad.

Protect Its Elegance
To preserve the original splendor and silky texture of Carpetdocia’s handwoven creations made with natural fibers—which add value to your living space—for generations, a careful care routine is essential.
Immediate Action and Liquid Spills
When a liquid spills, timing is critical. Using a clean, slightly damp cloth, blot the liquid gently from the surface without rubbing. Always work in the direction of the rug’s pile (the natural direction in which the fibers lie). Rubbing can damage the shape of delicate fibers such as TENCEL™ and viscose. If in doubt, stop immediately.
Routine Care and Light Balance
For your weekly cleaning routine, always use a vacuum cleaner with low suction. High-powered upright vacuums and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance how natural yarns react to light and prevent uneven changes in color (fading), we recommend rotating your rug every 2 to 6 months.
Expert Care (Professional Cleaning)
Fine textures such as handwoven fibers, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. These products can irreversibly damage the rug’s silky sheen and structural integrity. For a thorough clean, seek help only from professional rug care centers specializing in natural fibers.
