The Story of This Rug
The Shah Abbas design is the signature of Safavid court workshops, combining large palmettes, lotus rosettes, and arabesque vines. Ziegler & Co. reinterpreted this design in Sultanabad in the 19th century with soft earth tones. Afghan artisans continue the same design tradition today using Ghazni wool and natural dyes; natural washing gives the composition a time-softened patina.
Why a One-of-a-Kind Handwoven Afghan Rug
- Uniqueness: Only one of this rug exists; the same knotting rhythm and dye batch can never be reproduced.
- Natural dye durability: Unlike synthetic aniline dyes, natural root dyes do not fade; they only soften over time.
- Ghazni wool: Long-fiber, lanolin-rich wool from high-altitude sheep, providing natural stain resistance and a silky sheen.
- Asymmetrical Persian knot: Finer detail resolution and sharper motif edges than the Turkish (Gördes) knot.
- Investment value: Genuine Afghan rugs made with natural dyes gain value through generations of use.

Protect Your Elegance
To preserve the original splendor and silky texture of Carpetdocia’s handwoven and natural-fiber creations that add value to your living space for generations, you should adopt a careful maintenance routine.
Immediate Action and Liquid Spills
When a liquid is spilled, timing is the most critical factor. Using a clean, slightly damp cloth and never rubbing, gently blot the liquid from the surface. Always work in the direction of the rug’s pile (the natural lay of the fibers). Rubbing can damage the structure of delicate fibers such as TENCEL™ and viscose. If you are unsure, stop immediately.
Routine Care and Light Balance
For your weekly cleaning routine, always use vacuum cleaners with low suction power. High-powered upright vacuum cleaners and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance the reaction of natural fibers to light and prevent localized tone differences (fading), we recommend changing the direction of your rug every 2 to 6 months.
Expert Care (Professional Cleaning)
Noble materials such as handwoven fibers, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. These products can irreversibly damage the rug’s silky sheen and structural integrity. For deep cleaning, seek assistance only from professional rug-care centers specializing in natural fibers.
