The Story of This Rug
The Shah Abbas design takes its name from the 17th-century Safavid ruler Shah Abbas; it is a repertoire of palmettes, lotuses, and arabesques that matured in royal workshops. Afghan artisans reinterpret this repertoire with the muted 19th-century palette of Ziegler merchants; madder red and pomegranate-rind dyes are fixed in mordanted wool over several weeks, gaining depth through natural washing.
Why Choose a One-of-a-Kind Handwoven Afghan Rug
- Originality: Only one available.
- Durability of natural dyes: They do not fade and soften over time.
- Ghazni wool: Silky sheen and stain resistance.
- Asymmetrical Persian knot: Sharp detail.
- Investment value: A woven piece that appreciates in value.
Color and Design
Against a deep madder-red ground, four Shah Abbas palmette medallions rise in sequence along the central axis, interspersed with bouquets of lotus and pomegranate blossoms emerging from vases. Curving branches connect the motifs, while small boteh and clusters of leaves fill the corners. The inner border features a floral frieze on an indigo ground, and the outer border has a meander pattern on an ivory ground. Golden-yellow and oil-green accents lend a cool balance to the ground.
Care Recommendations
- Vacuum at low speed without a brush.
- Blot stains with a white cloth.
- Rotate every 6 months.
- Have it professionally cleaned by a rug specialist.
The vertical rhythm of the Shah Abbas palmettes transforms this runner into a timeless palace object.

Protect Your Elegance
To preserve the original splendor and silky texture of Carpetdocia’s handwoven and natural-fiber creations that add value to your living space for generations, you should adopt a careful maintenance routine.
Immediate Action and Liquid Spills
When a liquid is spilled, timing is the most critical factor. Using a clean, slightly damp cloth and never rubbing, gently blot the liquid from the surface. Always work in the direction of the rug’s pile (the natural lay of the fibers). Rubbing can damage the structure of delicate fibers such as TENCEL™ and viscose. If you are unsure, stop immediately.
Routine Care and Light Balance
For your weekly cleaning routine, always use vacuum cleaners with low suction power. High-powered upright vacuum cleaners and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance the reaction of natural fibers to light and prevent localized tone differences (fading), we recommend changing the direction of your rug every 2 to 6 months.
Expert Care (Professional Cleaning)
Noble materials such as handwoven fibers, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. These products can irreversibly damage the rug’s silky sheen and structural integrity. For deep cleaning, seek assistance only from professional rug-care centers specializing in natural fibers.
